Children need their fathers and mothers for them to be able to live adequately. The children gain from emotional support, practical assistance and from good role modeling from their parents. Compared to the amount of contact between the non-residential father and their children what matters is the quality of the father-child relationship. A growing body of evidence can prove the manner in which non-residential fathers affect their children. First, when a non-residential father has frequent contact and there is minimal conflict, children are faring better; however, when there is conflict, frequent visits are related to poorer adjustment of children. There is some evidence to suggest than when the divorced parent?s adjustment is taken into account that some of the differences between children from intact and divorced children disappears. The causal relationship between parents? and children?s adjustment still remains unclear. The reason could be that having better adjusted children improves the well-being of the parents. In dealing with children, the skills that parents have, have a profound influence on the children?s well-being. Many parents report diminished parenting practices immediately following divorce which appears to contribute to some of the problems that children experience as evidence has shown. A strong influence on children?s adjustment has been shown to come from the post-divorce conflict.
