The Wanted Taking Their U.S. Invasion To 'American Idol'

Boy band set to appear on the show next week in support of their forthcoming self-titled album.

The boy-band bonanza continues! The Wanted have just landed a spot on "American Idol" next week. The guys confirmed the long-teased news on Twitter. "And now for our big news ... we are excited to announce we will be performing on American Idol on 5th of April!! #TheWantedOnIdol," they shared late Wednesday, prompting a Twitter spree from fans excited to see them on the Fox competition show.

"5th of April ... be there #TheWantedOnIdol. Greatest fans on the planet. Love the #TWFanmily#TheWantedonIdol," they added.

The guys are currently appearing all over the States to promote their self-titled debut U.S. album, which will hit shelves April 24. Riding high off their first single, the cheeky "Glad You Came," the guys are set to release their next single, "Chasing the Sun," in the very near future.

The fivesome sat down with MTV News recently and shared that they are looking to "Glad You Came" as the inspiration for the other tunes that make it onto the album.

"You know, I think from the start when we were in the U.K., we got our first single, which was 'All Time Low,' and it set itself up," Tom Parker told MTV News about the band's control over their music and the direction they are hoping to go in. "And we all agree on a certain sound, and 'Glad You Came' was probably as [far as] we went in terms of difference in sound, but we all kind of come to an agreement to keep it upbeat, usually."

As for the super-warm U.S. reception, Parker's bandmate Siva Kaneswaran couldn't be more excited by the American enthusiasm for the band. "To be in the U.S. is amazing," he said. "But just as long as we go out there and be ourselves and the U.S. takes us as we are, we're just coming over here to have a laugh."

Are you looking forward to the Wanted's appearance on "Idol" next week? Tell us in the comments.

Rivaflowz.com: Relationships: Unmasking Love

I don?t think I?ve ever farted in front of my significant other. In fact, I?m pretty sure I did I super cartwheel out of bed, over the bed bench and baseball slide out of the bedroom door just to do it. I?ve bucked a toe or two with these fast moves. Hurts like hell.

When my boyfriend and I first started dating, I wouldn?t even let him see my morning face. He?d wake up to a clean mouth, astringent-cleaned face and a spritz of Victoria Secret.

I?d followed a friend?s advice: ?For the first three months, you never let him catch you slipping girl. Don?t let him wake up to morning breath, keep the sweats in the drawer and keep that lip gloss on deck!? For a tomboy with a vast sneaker collection, three pairs of heels and one lip gloss to her name; I was devastated. Keeping up these shenanigans for three months was going to be madness. Then it hit me. Wouldn?t he discover ?true me? after three months? Would he stick around then? If he?s going to leave, why should I stop him now? My friend is a fool. Love her to death, but trying to maintain and play these cat and mouse games to win over someone who?s already won, is wack. This beckons the question: At what point of the relationship, do we stop wearing our masks? If I backtrack through my union, I remember the exact point that I did. We met up with some friends at a beer garden in Long Island City for some fun. I?m still quite the inexperienced drinker; I mixed a Long Island Iced Tea with two beers. It wasn?t the greatest idea. Halfway back to the car, I stumbled over a few sidewalk cracks before I realized that my ?Oops my bad? had a slur. My new boyfriend laughed and giggled, even when I sat on a random brownstone steps, folded my arms and grimaced at him. ?What?s so funny?? I asked him. He smiled. ?You are. I?ve never seen you without inhibition.? At that moment all I could think about was prohibition. I grabbed hold of his arm, pulled it in the direction of the car and started to walk again. That night I threw up approximately three times and sprawled across the white sheets like a drunken snow angel. When I woke up the next morning, still a little hazy, he wasn?t beside me. I tiptoed to the living room where I found him, awake on the couch, grinning up at me. ?Drunk girlfriend! I see you?re awake. Sorry, there was no room on the bed for me.? I laughed and sat down beside him. For the first time, we spent the morning together; no make-up, last night?s clothes, morning breath and all. As the sun peeked through the blinds of the living room, he pinched my nose and said, ?Breakfast?? Why I didn?t do this earlier? A great weight was lifted off of my shoulder. During the next few months he?d find out about my sneaker collection and push me to wear them, he?d tell me that he loved my face pre-makeup and that my bad-hair-day hat was cute. This post is for all the girls who are obsessed with matching bra?s and panties, chipped nail polish and that little red dress. It?s for all the women who pretend they don?t have a past in order to keep their future. This is for the Sydney Shaws (Brown Sugar) who are awkward and clumsy and want nothing more than their best friends to fall in love with them.

If he doesn't love you for you now, he won't later on.

Our boyfriends should be our best friends: The people we aren?t afraid to show our flaws to, the person who has seen us at our best and our worst and the man who?ll deny you of your mask. Through play fights, my Ciara impersonation in the mirror and my ridiculously loud laugh at the movie theatres; I?ve learned that I?m loved for me. What was/is your mask? Are you still wearing it?

Wheel Jockey Spins Hoops So You Don't Have To

Wheel Jockey

?

Remember the good ol' days when all bikes came with centerstands??Neither do we.?But if you've ever tried to lube a motorcycle chain, inspect a tire, or clean a wheel using a kickstand, you know the tedium of rolling the bike forward in increments.

?

Wheel Jockey's $89 "Big Boy" model is made in the USA and designed for bikes up to 950 lbs, yet small enough to fit in a saddlebag. By walking a bike onto the contraption, the rear wheel turns on heavy ball bearing rollers, enabling access to moving bits without physically rolling the bike.

?

Got a smaller motorcycle (up to 650 lbs)? The?$59?"Sport" model should do the wheel-turning trick.

Banks find opportunity in Postal Service woes

(Reuters) - The bank industry, struggling to make the profits it used to, is using the struggles of another industry for its marketing: The Postal Service.

JPMorgan Chase & Co , Bank of America Corp , Citigroup Inc and Wells Fargo & Co are all using the looming threat of postal service cuts to sell bank services such as electronic payments and remittance pickups that can speed payments likely to be slowed by diminished mail service.

"It is a conversation starter," said Daniel Peltz, head of Wells Fargo's Treasury Management division.

For banks, electronic transactions save as much as one-third of the cost of processing checks, according to industry estimates. The potential savings are greatest for bigger banks, which reap additional economies of scale by running more transactions through the computer systems they have built.

Banks are looking for any chance to save money these days, as tough markets and a weak economy hit their profits, and traditional revenue streams dry up due to stricter regulations.

For bank customers, the new electronic payments and other services offer savings, too.

Greg Kerwick, a managing director in JPMorgan's Treasury Services unit, said his team is telling customers they might have to wait one to four days longer for invoices to reach customers and payments to return by mail, if Saturday postal delivery is eliminated.

His division, which helps 25,000 businesses with cash management, estimates that waiting an extra two days for payment would require a company that receives $5 billion of mail payments a year to come up with an extra $27 million of working capital.

To save that money, of course, customers must pay. For example, using lockbox services - where the bank picks up checks for businesses from postal plants seven days a week - can mean as much as $2 per check for the bank, which also can earn interest income during the maximum of three to four days they hold a payer's money before some checks are cleared, said Nancy Atkinson, a senior analyst with consulting firm Aite Group.

This "float period" could become even more valuable as interest rates rise in the future, she said.

Banks, however, may find it challenging to win more payment business because a delay in mail service is advantageous to bill payers who want to hold onto their funds as long as possible, Atkinson said. Payers typically drive the decision making around how they pay a supplier, surveys by Aite Group have found.

If more business turns to electronic payments, that could further hurt the Postal Service, which lost $5.1 billion in fiscal year 2011 and could see annual losses upward of $21 billion by 2016 if major changes are not made, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has said.

President Obama, in his budget proposal in February, called for an end to Saturday mail delivery and other cost-cutting by the Postal Service. The Senate is to consider a bill this week that would allow the Postal Service to consider ending Saturday mail after two years.

The service also has plans to close more than 200 mail processing plants, which would end next-day delivery of First Class Mail.

"Everybody has a desire to get away from checks and move more electronic," JPMorgan's Kerwick said. "This is placing greater urgency around making that happen."

"The mail will take longer to cycle through," Kerwick said.

To be sure, many mid-sized businesses use check-writing software and are in no rush to install new systems, said Lex Litton, a consultant with Phoenix-Hecht, which specializes in collecting paper checks at third-party processing centers.

A little more than half of payments received by larger companies still arrive by check, said Litton. For smaller companies about three-quarters are on paper.

Overall, paper payments to businesses are decreasing by a couple of percentage points a year, Litton said, citing surveys by his firm.

One reason for slow adoption is convenience. Sending checks in envelopes can allow businesses to easily add information that clarifies what they are paying and what discounts they might be applying.

"I'm an advocate of both" paper and electronic payments, said Ron Tauscher, a senior product manager in Citigroup's Global Transaction Services business.

Tauscher said he is discussing the Postal Service issues with Citigroup's customers. "It is clearly an opportunity to talk about their receivables," he said.

For payments still sent by check, some banks offer lockbox processing centers across the United States. Citigroup, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo together account for 35 of them. Crews from the centers go to nearby Postal Service sorting facilities around the clock to pick up envelopes with checks to be deposited quickly.

Known as remittance mail, the envelopes would get special treatment under the Postal Service's plans to cut costs, noted Litton. Banks would be able to continue to pick up those envelopes seven days a week even as first-class deliveries to businesses would become less frequent.

As a result, businesses may sign up for the lockbox services, Wells Fargo's Peltz said.

Litton said remittance mail would still likely move more slowly than today, though that is not certain. Regardless, the threat of delays is useful to the banks. "This looks like an opportunity to say there is one more advantage to electronic payments," said Litton.

At Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Paul Simpson, head of global transaction services, said the bank is talking to clients about electronic payment options as well as looking at new ways to enhance and speed up deposit and lockbox services. Depending on the postal service's consolidation plans, the bank could look at partnership opportunities at post office locations, where the bank could process checks and immediately capture electronic images of these payments.

A partnership with the U.S. Postal Service could help "create revenue streams that benefit both parties," Simpson said.

Curling to get to the bottom of colorectal cancer : rubber hose

When most people survive cancer, they just want to put the disease and its grueling treatment behind them. Not Deb Imada.

That's because her cancer was in her behind.Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, And now she's made it her mission to put colorectal cancer in the forefront of people's minds.

She's doing that by organizing the second annual Bumspiel for Colorectal Cancer to be held at the Royal City Curling Club on Saturday. The event is a fundraiser for the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. But more importantly, Imada hopes it raises awareness about the disease and how to survive it.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian men and women combined. Of the approximately 22,We have a fantastic range of Glass Tiles and glass mosaic Tiles.000 Canadians diagnosed with colorectal cancer last year, 8,900 will die from it. Those are grim numbers considering the disease is curable 90 per cent of the time if it's caught early.

It's that last part that hangs most people up, says Imada, who lives in Surrey. It's not easy to talk about your backside, and "people are so fearful about getting a colonoscopy."

In fact, cancer was the furthest thing from Imada's mind when she went to her doctor to get checked out for a possible recurrence of the hemorrhoids that had plagued her after he son was born four years earlier. Her family had no history of colorectal cancer, she'd never had a problem with benign polyps, she was active and she was only 43 years old, seven years younger than the primary risk group.

But when her doctor said she felt a lump during her examination, Imada's world turned upside down.

Four months of tests, two surgeons and five days of radiation treatment later the tumour was removed.

"The waiting is the hardest part," says Imada. "The whole time I felt like a ticking time bomb."

But her battle didn't end there. Six months of chemotherapy stretched to eight. She suffered numerous side-effects including painful numbness in her fingers and the bottoms of her feet. She says there were days she was so physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, she couldn't get out of bed.

Regular screenings to ensure she remained clear of cancer were emotionally agonizing.

"It's like the doctors say, 'we've cured you but the chances of recurrence are highest in the first two years,'" she says. Every colonoscopy or CT scan, she hoped and prayed for a clean report. She'll continue to be screened for the rest of her life. It's like a fellow patient once told her, "We're out of the woods, but we're not yet out of the forest."

During her battle with colorectal cancer, a colleague at work was also diagnosed with the disease and eventually died from it. That's when she made a promise to him, and to herself, to help spread the word about the disease and the importance of early detection through regular screening.

"It makes me mad when someone dies from this because it's so curable. An Air purifier is a device which removes contaminants from the air."

A recreational curler at the RCCC before she was diagnosed, she glommed onto the idea of a "bumspiel" because her son had shown interest in the sport while watching the Vancouver Winter Olympics.Dimensional Mailing magic cube for Promotional Advertising, The clever play on words helped as well, she says.

It's a non-competitive event that Imada promises will be just as much fun for beginners as hardcore stonethrowers.Wireless Indoor Positioning System have become very popular in the system. It's even attracted a team of four doctors from the Netherlands who specialize in colorectal cancer and found out about the bumspiel while searching the Internet. There's also door prizes as well as an award for the top fundraiser.

Canada vs USA ? One On One Soldier Tug Of War

Prior to the departure of 31 Canadian Brigade Group (31 CBG) personnel from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Canadian soldiers observed US National Guard soldiers playing an interesting version of the game Tug of War. 31 CBG soldiers were fascinated by the spectacle and cheered on the competitors. Displaced Iraqis still suffering from sectarian war

Talib al-Ajami stands near his makeshift house in a garbage and sewage-filled slum in north Baghdad holding a torn, creased letter from insurgents who drove him from his home in 2006.

"In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful," the letter begins, but the only mercy in what follows is that Talib received a "final warning" instead of being killed outright.

"We know about you and your mean, sectarian activities, and it is time for every soul that holds destruction and hatred for this country to die," it says.

"You should know that you are a target for us wherever you go. This published statement is for the traitors who live in Khamis al-Tajah," a small village near Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad.

The letter, which is signed the "Advisory Council of the Mujahedeen", was the second Talib had received in 2006.

One of his brothers was murdered without warning, and Talib decided to leave. He now lives in a shanty town called Mukhayamat.

Iraq's brutal sectarian war has died down from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but the UN says some 1.3 million Iraqis remain internally displaced persons (IDPs) -- Iraqis living in their country, but driven from their homes.

According to UN envoy Martin Kobler, some 500,000 of them live in "sub-standard" conditions.

Claire Bourgeois, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representative for Iraq, told AFP that fear and lack of a place to return to are among the main issues keeping IDPs from going home.

Mukhayamat, one of six "settlements" in the Chikouk area of Kadhimiyah neighbourhood in north Baghdad, is a miserable slum of makeshift one-storey houses with woven reeds or sheets of metal for roofs, often topped with plastic to shield against the rain.

Spiderwebs of electric wiring strung from wooden poles provide electricity to power a few light bulbs, a fan or tiny television in the houses.

The garbage-strewn streets are dirty and rutted, and some have small canals down the middle that carry sewage into expansive pools of foetid water.

It is here that Talib lives with one of his two wives and two of his nine children, in two small, sparse rooms in a house of rough concrete blocks with a makeshift metal roof. His other wife and children live elsewhere.

The house has a small walled dirt yard and a garden, but is flanked by a garbage dump on one side and a pond of murky, junk-filled water on the other.

"The area here is safe but the situation is miserable," said Talib, who is 40 years old and works as a day labourer when he can find jobs. "I am afraid of returning back home."

Talib's lot in life was once different, when he and two brothers each owned homes in Khamis al-Tajah.

But that changed in 2006, after the bombing of the Shiite Al-Askari shrine in Samarra unleashed a wave of sectarian violence across Iraq.

Talib said he received one threatening letter, but ignored it. The second, marked "final warning," followed two weeks later.

One of his brothers was kidnapped and murdered in 2006 without receiving a warning, Talib said, and he decided to leave.

Talib was later told his house had been blown up.

"We lost everything we owned; we left the area without getting anything from home," Talib said. "We demand the government to compensate us for our lost houses and properties."

The Mukhayamat settlement, which is home to some 3,000 people, is one of the worst in the Chikouk area, where a total of about 50,000 IDPs reside, UNHCR senior field assistant Mazin al-Nkshbandi told AFP.

"There is no sewage network, there is no water or water network," he said. "It's not designed for living."

Other settlements in Chikouk face similar problems, he said.

UNHCR provides assistance to IDPs including items such as water tanks and filters, doors and windows, and removing garbage and sewage, Nkshbandi said.

But local authorities do not provide services such as garbage pickup because the IDP settlements are illegal, so the waste builds back up, he said.

While the conditions in Chikouk are awful, leaving has its own risks -- Nkshbandi said that some people who left the area for their homes were killed.

Sabria Hamad, 49, also resides in Mukhayamat.

"Four times we found threats under our door," but "as we cannot read or write, we shredded them," said Sabria, who used to live in Haswa in the Abu Ghraib area.

Gunmen later came to deliver the message that "you Shiites cannot stay here anymore," Sabria said, so she and her family left.

"They did not give us the chance to take anything from our house," she said.

But that did not spare her family -- one of her sons was electrocuted to death in a butcher shop in Taji, north of Baghdad, in what Sabria suspects was not an accident.

Another son was shot dead in the town of Latifiyah south of Baghdad with his uncle, and a daughter was killed in clashes involving American forces in Diyala province.

Sabria now lives in a three-room shanty made of concrete blocks with her husband, a handicapped son and 14 grandchildren.

The rooms have bare walls and carpets on the floor. When she, her husband and some of the grandchildren ate lunch, they gathered around a large metal plate of rice, sitting on the floor.

A partially-collapsed reed fence frames the house's small, dusty, junk-strewn yard. The house is located near the other end of the garbage dump that adjoins Talib's yard.

"My life is like hell; I swear by God, I do not have 1,000 dinars," or less than $1, Sabria said.

"The government did not help us and did not find a solution for us," she continued.

She and her family had lived in Haswa for years, but cannot go back: "Some people went back and they killed them. We do not have place to return and we are afraid."

Apps could be overtaking the Web, says report

5 hrs.

An app for weather. An app for banking. An app for news, for sports, for games, for travel, for department stores, for insurance companies, for ?.wait: Who needs the Web?

As more of us turn our lives over to apps, or programs, that we download onto our smartphones, tablets, and now some TVs, our reliance on the Web itself is changing, says a new report on the future of the Web from Pew Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University.

This change is not only a shift in how we're getting our information -- on smaller, more mobile devices -- but a change in the way we've been sharing information in the last 15 to 20 years, via the Web. Pew and Elon University interviewed more than 1,000 tech experts and critics from the public and private sector, as well as from universities and think tanks about what the Web will look like in the year 2020. ?And for some, the rise of the app is diminishing the Web as we know it.

?Apps are like cable channels ? closed, proprietary, and cleaned-up experiences," Susan Crawford, former White House technology adviser, and now a professor at Harvard, said in the report.

"I don?t want the world of the Web to end like this. But it will, because people?s expectations have been shaped by companies that view them as consumers. Those giant interests will push every button they can: fear, inexperience, passivity, and willingness to be entertained. And we?ll get a cleaned-up world that we can be perfectly billed for. It?s not good."

A kind of tipping point may have been reached last June, Pew said, when researchers reported the amount of time Americans "spent on apps began to outpace the time spent on the desktop or mobile Web," an average of 81 minutes a day with apps compared to 74 minutes a day on the Web.?

By December, the gap was even wider: 72 minutes a day on the Web compared to 94 minutes a day with apps, according to comScore, Alexa and Flurry Analytics.

Along those lines, "the boom in mobile connectivity has been accompanied by a boom in innovation and sales" of apps, Pew said.Earlier this month, Apple announced 25 billion apps have been downloaded since it opened its App Store in 2008, which made it easy, inexpensive and fast to download programs tailored to a user's interests onto their mobile devices.?

Google's Android Market, recently renamed Google Play, reached 10 billion downloads by last December, Pew said, "and users have been downloading apps at a rate of 1 billion a month."

Jeffrey Alexander, a senior technology analyst at SRI International, said the Web "will come to resemble a segment within the 'app economy' more than the reverse. The current incarnation of the Web will continue to be important for certain kinds of human-computer interaction, particularly those that require sustained attention and a richer media experience."

"The trends are quite clear," said Pew. "Mobile tools such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks and laptop computers are now a primary source of Internet connectivity in highly developed nations, and the uptake of technology tools in less-developed regions of the world has also been dominated by small, wireless devices. The latest surveys of American adults by the Pew Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project show that nearly two-thirds connect to the Web via a smartphone, tablet computer, or an on-the-go laptop computer."

Despite the trend, 59 percent of Pew and Elon University's respondents agree with this statement that by 2020, the Web will be "stronger than ever in users' lives," a place where "most people do most of their work, play, communication, and content creation."

Another 35 percent agreed that eight years from now, "most people will prefer to use specific applications (apps) accessible by Internet connection to accomplish most online work, play, communication, and content creation. The ease of use and perceived security and quality-assurance characteristics of apps will be seen as superior when compared with the open Web."

Six percent did not respond to the question at all.

The Web's open nature, its importance as a means of communication and a marketplace of ideas, will win out, said?Jerry Michalski, a consultant at the Institute for the Future, in the report.

"The gated bubble worlds formed by app markets, Facebook, and other private spaces will bloom and fade, while people will keep gathering in the open spaces," he said.

But there's no question, concerns are there.

"I wish it weren?t true, but the history of enclosure, centralization, and consolidation makes me very pessimistic about the open Web winning over the closed apps," said Seth Finkelstein, a civil libertarian programmer, and past winner of the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award, in the report.?

"There will always be a Web, but it may end up like the imagery of a person standing on a soapbox, referred to more for its romantic symbolism than mattering in reality."

Fruit Ninja updated, new multiplayer capabilities added

Android Central

The fruit-slashing favourite, Halfbricks' Fruit Ninja, has received an update today that brings with it some pretty nice new multiplayer features.

The "pomegranate" update is now live in the Google Play Store. The multiplayer options are now available using both local and online multiplayer services. At first glance, it seems to work really well too. You can choose who you want to play against, or swipe over the quick match option to be taken to a random opponent.

Beyond this, as with any good update we also get some bug fixes too. There is a compatibility update for a small number of devices that were experiencing a "minor audio bug."

Download links are after the break. Note though that this update is only for the paid version of the application.

If you are the only one than it will not make sense to buy one that is capable of making 10 cups of coffee.

US aid cutoff fails to end Afghan prison searches

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Female visitors to Afghanistan's main prison were still being subjected to body cavity searches Saturday despite a suspension of U.S. funding and orders from Afghan officials to stop the practice, a Western official said.

It's a situation that both shows the fading influence of the U.S. government in Afghanistan and provides an example of the type of issues of conduct and policy that may arise as the U.S. transfers its own detention facility to the Afghan government.

The commander of Pol-i-Charki prison outside the capital has had female guards performing the intrusive searches on all women visiting inmates for at least the past month, according to a Western official briefed on the procedures. Men are not submitted to similar searches. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue and so spoke on condition of anonymity.

After trying to work behind the scenes to get the searches at Pol-i-Charki stopped without success, the Obama administration suspended U.S. assistance to the prison earlier this week in hopes that the financial pressure would force a change.

"Until we have determined that this utterly unacceptable practice has ceased, the United States government has suspended all mentoring activity other than that specifically focused on monitoring visitation search procedures," said Gavin Sundwall, a spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Kabul. He said delivery of equipment to the prison had also been halted.

He did not provide a dollar figure for the blocked assistance. The United States has spent millions on improvements to Pol-i-Charki since 2009, expanding its capacity to 7,000 inmates from 4,000 previously.

The U.S. government has a host of mentors who regularly visit the prison to run training sessions and also has been building facilities for vocational programs and business training, along with medical facilities, at Pol-i-Charki.

But body cavity searches were still going on Saturday, the Western official said. The searches were first reported by The New York Times.

The policy is against Afghan law and international human rights standards and is not even implemented according to standard hygiene practices, said Heather Barr, an Afghanistan researcher with Human Rights Watch who has done extensive work on the prison system.

"We've been told they have a limited supply of gloves, so they change them every four of five women," Barr said.

The commander of the prison, Khan Mohammad, appears to be continuing the searches despite an order to cease by his superiors. The head of Afghanistan's prisons, Gen. Amir Jamshid, ordered Mohammad to stop the searches before the U.S. aid stopped, the Western official said. It was not immediately clear if his decision had been overruled by someone higher in the Interior Ministry.

Khan did not respond to calls seeking comment.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry denied that any illegal searches had occurred since the Interior Ministry took over control of the prisons from the Justice Department three months ago.

"It's not happening, this kind of invasive search. That's not happening in Pol-i-Charki prison. It's against our law," said the spokesman, Sediq Sediqi. Afghan rules for searches provide only for cavity searches conducted by a medical professional and not as a matter of a routine search, according to government documents.

The standoff comes down to a larger debate in the Afghan government over who should have control of the country's prison system ? a collection of underfunded facilities where U.N. investigators found evidence of torture in September. The Justice Ministry agreed to give up control of the system after it was embarrassed by a massive jailbreak last year in which some 500 Taliban prisoners tunneled out of the main jail in southern Afghanistan.

But the switch to Interior Ministry control means that the same officials are overseeing detention and criminal investigations, which could make abuse more likely.

"The people who are trying to solve the crime and the people who are holding the prisons can't be the same people. There's too much danger that they'll resort to torture to get information," Barr said.

It also means that many of the people that the U.S. and other international allies spent millions to train to run the prison system are no longer involved in overseeing the facilities. Beyond the issues of human rights abuse, U.S. officials have repeatedly said that the transfer of their detention facilities needed more time because the Afghans did not have the expertise needed to run the 3,000-inmate facility in Parwan.

But now the Afghans have signed an agreement with the U.S. government giving them nominal control of the Parwan facility immediately, along with the gradual transfer of responsibility for prisoners over six months. The agreement signed last week was seen an important move toward satisfying President Hamid Karzai's demand for more control over international forces operating in his country.

At Pol-i-Charki, it's unclear if the misconduct is a result of political gamesmanship, ego or a lack of resources being dealt with in a very disturbing way.

The former commander of Pol-i-Charki said that his guards never performed body cavity searches on visitors, but he said he didn't have to because he had X-ray machines donated by the British government for screenings.

"I've just recently heard that now both those X-ray machines have broken down," said Gen. Abdul Balqi Behsudi.

Sprint to LightSquared: it's over

The writing's been on the wall for a few weeks and now Sprint's officially severing its partnership with LightSquared. Philip Falcone's project had a contractual deadline of March 15th to gain regulatory approval for its LTE service on the 1.6GHz spectrum, which was shot down by the FCC in February. A day later, Big Yellow exercised its right to pull the plug, paying back $65 million in prepayments and continuing to build out a LTE network on its own. Nextel's better half didn't slam the door shut entirely, however. If, by some miracle (and it would be a big one), the company can change Julius Genachowski's mind, it'd certainly consider teaming up again, so no hard feelings, eh?

For its part, LightSquared has issued a formal response, saying that the contract termination is in "the best interests of both parties" and "not unexpected given the regulatory delays." On the upside, the company has had its coffers swelled by a not inconsiderable $65 million, which is the first good news it's had for a while.
