The Plug Hub Manages Your Mess of Surge Protector Cables [Video]

The Plug Hub Manages Your Mess of Surge Protector Cables We've talked about a lot of cordless workspace solutions here at Lifehacker, but if all you need is a bit of organization around your surge protector, the Plug Hub lets you shorten and organize your cables for clean, easy access.

The Plug Hub is a simple case with three openings in the top for cables and a door that swings open for easy management. Inside, you'll find three anchors on which you can wrap any excess cable so it isn't an eyesore of tangles. You can either stand it on end or use the mounting holes on the back to attach it to a wall behind your desk. The Plug Hub retails for $28.95.

A car with character: The small, stylish Fiat 500 has a personality big enough for Texas

Like the Eames Lounge Chair?and the Helvetica typeface, the original Fiat 500 remains a revered icon of a mid-century design. Produced from 1957-1975, the stylish, affordable, and smartly packaged rear-engined automobile became enormously popular in Europe.?

Fifty years after the original, a modernized 500 has debuted. It has grown by about 20 inches in length, is filled with features and amenities, and has had the European charm dialed up to 11. Now, retooled for North America, the Fiat 500 has arrived on our shores. It brings with it not just affordable Italian style, but a thoroughly European idea: a spacious, well-equipped, premum subcompact car. Can it catch on in Texas?

The 500 ('Cinquecento,' if you prefer) follows the "cute and retro" direction led by the revived Mini Cooper in the early 2000s. In fact, it was overseen by Frank Stephenson, head of Fiat's design studio at the time, and the same man responsible for the Mini. This car is smaller and has a character all its own.

The wheels-pushed-to-the-corners look give the 500 a suprisingly sporty stance.

Activating the 'Sport' on the dash changes the power steering assist and the throttle response. The normally super-light steering becomes heavily weighted, and the transmission shifts at higher RPMs.?

The Fiat 500 debuted in 2007 in Europe to much fanfare as an alternative to the similarly retro Mini and Volkswagen New Beetle. The 500 that arrived in 2011 has been thoroughly reworked and is built by Chrysler in Mexico. Changes include exterior differences, a larger fuel tank, bigger brakes, changes to the headlights, increased body strength, upgraded seats, steering wheel controls and more. You get a sense that designers have done done their homework adapting the 500 for U.S. buyers' needs.?

The North American 500 has 1.4-liter 101-horsepower Multiair engine produced in Dundee, Mich. It's not a lot, but this car reenforces that you don't need gobs of horsepower to have fun. Weighing in at under 2,400 pounds helps, too.

?

The "500" logo seems to be etched and enameled in crevasses all over the car. Fortunately, the "500" logo is incredibly cool.

The 500c ("C" stands for cabrio") has a dual-layer power retractable cloth top that slides straight back at the push of a button. With the top up it feels just like a regular hard top, with no additional noise or compromises. It can also retract to a partial-open setting that becomes like a large sunroof.?

?

One of the best aspects of the 500 is the visibility to the outside. You sit high, perched atop tall seats with wide glass openings all around. Despite the smaller footprint than the Mini, the 500 is taller, so there's plenty of headroom for six-footers, even in the back seats.?

The optional TomTom Navigation seems to be just a third-party navgation device that you clumsily shove into a hole on the top of the dashboard. It's inelegant, and worse, inconvenient, because you have to stow it away in the dashboard every time you park. It looks like a detachable magnet for thieves.?

The volume and skip controls for the sterio are shaped like sections of a pie, no doubt designed with symmetry in mind. The problem with volume buttons, unlike a knob, is that you have to look at the buttons every time to adjust the volume.?

The concentric-circle gauge cluster is a design flourish that's aesthetically pleasing but still functional. For the driver, it's a constant reminder that you're driving something a little bit special.

The big, central gear selector is plastickey and feels somewhat rattly when slotting from one gear into the next. ?

?

We sampled the six-speed automatic, although we tried briefly the available five-speed manual transmission last spring. ?The automatic transmission is only offered for North America, with it the estimated fuel economy takes a hit: 27 mpg city/34 highway as opposed to the manual's 30/38. The automatic drives smoothly, but isn't the liveliest automatic we've driven.?

Soft suspension and gentle body roll are part of the character of the 500, and help make it so comfortable on harsh roads.?

The 500 is spacious inside; the only hint that you're in a tiny car comes from the narrowness and the closeness between the driver and passenger seats.

The 500 seems to come alive making mundane trips around town, and this is its greatest strength. It makes the uneventful trips on Houston's awful roads a joy, and it seems to bound along with endless enthusiasm. The cushy tires and soft suspension soak up even the worst potholes (trust us) and grossly uneven concrete slabs without issue. ?You can wind up the engine without exceeding the local speed limits, and you can fit the car almost anywhere. Great outward visibility and short overhangs help create the sense of uninhibited mobility. ?

?

In the city, you can sense that you're having more fun than the guy in the sedan next to you. ?

The price for our tester ? a fully-equipped 500c Lounge with almost every option ? was around $26,000. Hardtop models without as many boxes ticked start at under $16,000.

Any piece of design is only as good as its functionality. Luckily, the Fiat 500 doesn't disappoint, and it's as fun in everyday commuting as it is to look at. Living with it gives you a sense of occasion that's hard to come by in any price range, and that far outweighs a few [authentically Italian] quirks on the inside. The Fiat 500 stands out as a car that drives with its own character, while looking like a Cars 2 character.?

?

This modern 500 could be on its way to being a classic like its forebearer.?

Don't Keep Me Waiting: Special Acoustic Britney Spears Track Released

Britney Spears is making this holiday season memorable with gifts to her fans - and we're not just talking about her engagement to Jason Trawick, nice as that was.

Earlier, she released a new/old song, "Strangest Love," reportedly recorded (but never released) for 2003's In The Zone. Now another new song has surfaced online.

It's an acoustic version of “Don’t Keep Me Waiting,” which was clearly enhanced with production on the album version. But this one is fun to listen to in its own way.

Listen to Britney Spears in a rare acoustic setting and see what you think:

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital Inboxes [Mail]

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIt's fun getting email and snail mail when you receive something you actually want, but that joy is easily overshadowed by the massive amount of mail you don't really care to read. While SPAM filters do a great job of killing your supply of junk mail, your physical and digital inboxes are likely filled with newsletters and advertisements you could easily do without. Here's how you can clear out all that crap.

The Physical Inbox

Your physical inbox is frequently stuffed with catalogs, advertisements, coupon sheets, and mail for previous residents on a regular basis, and it sucks. While the United States Postal Service (which may go out of business in the next decade) could easily solve their money troubles (and save a lot of paper) by instituting fines for unsolicited junk mail, they probably won't and so you're stuck with a bunch of crap you don't need or want. Fortunately there are a few ways to help clean out the crap so you only get the mail you want.

Employ a Mail Blocking Service

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf you're willing to pay a small fee (generally $20-30) to clean out your physical mailbox, services like Greendimes, 41 Pounds, and Stop the Junk Mail can take care of the problem for you. All you do is provide a information about you and your problem address and the services will make the necessary calls to get you off of junk and grey mail lists. While they won't be able to stop 100% of the unwanted mail you receive, the reduction rates are usually between 85 and 90%. That's a big difference.

Switch to Electronic Billing and Banking Statements

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesMost companies don't want to pay the cost of sending you mail when they can just give you a bill online. It's cheaper for them, and it's less hassle for you. Everybody wins in this situation, so it's likely that any bills or statements you receive can be stopped by opting in to an electronic format. Every time you receive one of these bills just go to the company's web site and look for an option to get an electronic statement. Sometimes the URL you need will be on the bill itself. If you receive a handful of bills and statements that don't have an electronic option, you can use a service like Earth Class Mail to have electronic, downloadable versions created for you automatically.

Strike Out Mail to Former Residents

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf you're not the first person to ever live in your home, you're probably receiving some mail from previous residents who forgot to forward their mail or just never notified some of the junk senders of their move. According to a thread on Metafilter, most people were told by the US Postal Service to indicate that this person has moved and leave the mail for their carrier the next day. User jmd82 provides the most specific explanation:

At my previous apartment, I asked the post office what to do and they said strike out the person's name and write "moved" while leaving it in the mailbox for the postman. I think they ask for the striking out of the name to make it obvious that it's the wrong address, whereas writing on mail alone might be glanced over.

While doing this is certainly no guarantee, as the US Postal Service has a lot of mail to handle and things are going to slip through, if you're persistent you should be able to at least reduce the delivery of mail that doesn't belong to you.

The Digital Inbox

The digital inbox can often feel more cluttered by unwanted mail than the physical because, in a list of messages, all mail looks about the same. Inbox clutter has long been a problem online, of course, so there are plenty of tools to help you out. Some are likely built into your email service or app already, and others are available elsewhere online.

Get Rid of Newsletters and Ads You Don't Want

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesSometimes you sign up for newsletters unintentionally and you find yourself stuck with a bunch of mail you don't want to read. You can get rid of it quickly by doing a quick search for the word "unsubscribe" and creating a filter that automatically deletes emails with that word in it. Of course, that system is imperfect because it's possible that it will catch a message that's not a newsletter. (Not very likely, but possible.) Alternatively, you can use a service like Unroll.me that's designed to find all the newsletters in your inbox and help you easily unsubscribe without hassle. (Note: This service only works with popular online email providers, not any IMAP inbox.)

Create a Whitelist Filter

How to Eliminate Your Unwanted Mail from Your Physical and Digital InboxesIf your email service or app provides filtering options, you should consider creating a whitelist that sorts your email by priority. Even with features like Gmail's Priority Inbox, you're always going to be the best judge of what's important and what isn't. All you need to do is create a filter that is designed to ignore important messages and leave them in the inbox, but move everything else into a secondary folder (or label, if you're a Gmail user). This way only email senders you've designated as important will show up in your inbox and you can check the secondary folder when you have a bit more time. Whitelists have the disadvantage of being too strict, but since you'll be checking both your primary and now secondary inbox you won't have to worry too much about that. The filter isn't set in stone, either, so you'll be able to update it as needed until it's working great for you.

Sterling baseball team wins Legion title

STERLING --There were four teams that brought home state titles over the course of the year. And one of them was in the summer. The Sterling B Legion team hosted the state tournament on the Northeastern Junior College campus and put together great win after great win to take the title.

It was a fun moment. The fact that it occurred after the end of the regular high school baseball season did not lessen its significance at all. In fact, in many ways it made it seem more important. It was a long season. And while every team is close, there is something to be said for the summer baseball players who play for so long and so hard and through all the hot weather.

Coach Josh Wilson, the assistant coach on the Sterling high school baseball team, pulled the full potential out of his players. That was important as the team was whittled at throughout the tournament due to injuries and other obligations.

One of the biggest losses was Luke Engelhaupt, who injured his ankle sliding into second.

Freshmen stepped in and showed up big with Ty Lucero and and James Skerjanec both contributing in the final game.

Chaz Myers threw one of the best games he had in his high school career to give his team the edge. He wasn't the only Tiger who stood out from the pack. Brendan Diaz was named as the most valuable hitter, hitting a .643 on the tournament. But the MVP went to catcher Wyatt Nelson, who fought off the heat fatigue that normally plagues others at his position as the temperatures climbed above 100 and had a 1.000 fielding percentage. He also hit over .500 on the tournament.

All in all, the heat, the sweat and grime, the sheer length of the tournament, was worth it as the team brought home the title.

On a personal note, it was the first major event that I was out to cover after the birth of my son. Still very sleep deprived, the team, the coaches, and the parents all stepped up and gave me a lot of help to make sure I could get the best coverage out of the event that I could. Not just on the Sterling side either. Fleming was still in the mix up until the end and they helped in equal portion.

MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. -- The mayor of Earlville is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated. Mark Doeberl, 50, was stopped at a checkpoint on Route 12-B in the Town of Eaton Friday afternoon.

State police say a trooper spotted an open can of beer on the vehicle's arm rest, an empty can on the rear floor, and detected alcohol on Doeberl's breath. Police say Doeberl had a blood alcohol level at 0.1 percent.

He was ticketed for DWI, driving with a BAC over .08 percent and consuming alcoholic beverages in a vehicle.

Doeberl became mayor of Earlville in July 2010 when the previous mayor was arrested and charged with grand larceny.

Pakistan military hid Osama in Abbottabad: Ex-army chief

Washington: Pakistani military had harboured Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden with the knowledge of former president General Pervez Musharraf, former army chief General Ziauddin Butt has said.

An article on the Jamestown Foundation website, which cited Butt, said that despite denials, evidence is emerging that "elements within the Pakistani military harboured Osama with the knowledge of Musharraf and Kayani". Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is the current army cheif.

Ziauddin Butt, a former army chief, told a conference on Pakistani-US ties in October 2011 that according to his knowledge then director general of Intelligence Bureau, Brigadier (retd.) Ijaz Shah, had "kept Osama bin Laden in an Intelligence Bureau safe house in Abbottabad".

Osama bin Laden was gunned down May 2 by US commandos who mounted a daring operation using stealth helicopters.

The retired general said in the same address that the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) had helped the CIA to track Osama down and kill him.

The report said that stunning revelation was unreported for some time as some intelligence officers had asked journalists not to publish Butt's remarks.

The report said Butt told the daily Dawn Dec 11 that he fully believed that "(Brigadier) Ijaz Shah had kept this man (bin Laden in the Abbottabad compound) with the full knowledge of General Pervez Musharraf..." Butt added, "Ijaz Shah was an all-powerful official in the government of General Musharraf".

To a query on whether the present army chief knew about it, Butt said yes, but later added: "(General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani) may have known - I do not know - he might not have known."

The former army chief has, however, not been able to explain as to how Osama was not found even after Brigadier Shah and Musharraf went out of power.

Butt had been the ISI chief under then prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Sharif had promoted him as the army chief after forcibly retiring General Pervez Musharraf Oct 12, 1999, but the army's top brass then revolted.

Musharraf, who toppled Sharif and became the new chief executive of the country, stepped down in 2008.

Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistani top military officials had major differences, including on Pakistan's ties with Osama bin Laden.

According to Butt, Sharif had made up his mind to cooperate with the US and track down Osama in 1999.

Citing a senior advisor to the prime minister, the report said, "the general staff ousted Sharif to scuttle the `get-Osama' plan".

Butt said that Nawaz Sharif had set up a special task force of 90 US-trained commandos to track down Osama in Afghanistan.

"If the Sharif government had continued on this course, this force would likely have caught bin Laden by December 2001, but the plan was aborted by Ziauddin Butt's successor as ISI general director, Lieutenant General Mahmud Ahmed," the report added.

Action Movie FX App is Awesome, Free Fun (Mashable)

[brightcove video="1344414576001 " /] Admit it, you've always wanted to be an action star. I mean, who wouldn't want to effortlessly dodge flying cars, helicopters and missiles? Now, thanks to action auteur J.J. Abrams's new free app, Action Movie FX, and a little help from your iPhone, you can.

[More from Mashable: 1976 Letter from Potential Partner Calls Steve Jobs a ?Joker? [VIDEO]]

The app launched in Apple's App Store just a day after Abrams big-screen actioner Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol hit theaters. Abram's Bad Robot produced and Brad Bird directed (and Mashable hit the red carpet premiere). Included effects are "inspired by" the film. It's obviously designed to appeal those who would not only love to see Tom Cruise's latest film, but wouldn't mind starring in it too.

Action Movie FX [iTunes link] is an incredibly simple app that accomplishes an impressive feat: It puts you in the middle of the action. Here's how it works: You open the app and select one of two free action effects: Missile Attack and Car Smash. You can purchase additional effects for 99 cents apiece. After you've selected the scene, you shoot a short video. The apps offers some guidance and how and where to shoot (shoot over flat surface if you want the missile to land properly). It also offers a handy screen overlay that shows you approximately where the effect will occur in your clip.

[More from Mashable: 6 Crazy Tech Predictions for 2012]

It's also helpful if you have someone else hold the camera. All they have to do is hit the big red record button, hold the camera steady and record. I'd suggest recording a minute or less since most of the effects are pretty brief. Once the video is recorded, Action Movie FX offers an effects slider that lets you adjust where in your recording to start the effect. Next, you process the film and preview. You can still go back and adjust the timing until the effect hits at just the right moment.

The final product is a hoot -- the effects overlay is near perfect. You can save locally to your own camera roll, email, or share via Facebook.

The app requires iOS 4.3 or later and works with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2.

I made my own brief effects-laden film (and could have done a better job positioning the camera), and I encourage you iPhone owners to do the same. If you do make your own video, we'll make an exception to our "no HTML" rule if you'll paste the link to it in the comments below, so we all can enjoy your artistry.

Review: "Extremely Loud" and incredibly healing (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Oskar Schell is on a quest. The boy has found a key belonging to his father, who perished in the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. The key was in a small envelope on which the word "Black" was written and Oskar believes, if he can just find the lock to which the key belongs, he will discover a secret message from his dead dad.

He spends long months traveling far and wide across New York City's five boroughs, methodically tracking down persons named Black, hoping to find the one who will know where the key belongs and Oskar's father's connection to it.

That's the basic plot of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," a moving drama about one boy's efforts to make sense of the senselessness of that awful day 10 years ago.

Jonathan Safran Foer's 2005 novel of the same name, upon which the movie is based, was 368 pages long. It was filled with conspicuous wordplay, pictures, typographical illustrations and stories within stories about other epic horrors. It was a showy and sometimes excessive display of individual authorial cleverness anchored in a collective tragedy.

The movie version, directed by Stephen Daldry ("The Reader") and with a screenplay by Eric Roth, wisely streamlines Foer's story, concentrating on Oskar (Thomas Horn) and his search and dropping the gimmicks.

Oskar is an odd enough kid as is, precocious and whip smart but socially ill at ease. It's more than likely that he's somewhere on the Asperger's Syndrome spectrum, though he informs us that tests proved inconclusive. Put it this way: He carries a tambourine with him when he ventures out into the world, finding that its jingle allays his debilitating anxieties.

His father (Tom Hanks), a jeweler, encouraged Oskar's quirky interests, organizing father-son treasure hunts and expeditions around the city. Oskar approaches his hunt for the key with the same methodical fervor. As he works his way from Black to Black, he discovers that those bearing the name cross all racial, ethnic and economic lines but that almost to a man (and woman), they treat him with kindness and understanding.

How one reacts to "Extremely Loud" will likely have much to do with how one regards the eccentric performance of newcomer Horn as Oskar. He yells many of his lines, is over-emphatic, and walks with a swift, purposeful stride. I found him impressive and effective -- I know kids just like this -- but my companion at a screening found him irritating and off-putting.

The adult performers, in what are supporting roles, do especially well. Hanks brings just the right note of spirited understanding to the father, Sandra Bullock beautifully underplays Oskar's grieving mother, and Max von Sydow is a wonder as a mute older man whom Oskar befriends.

In the end, the movie is about healing and coming to understand that some things can't be explained. It explains that beautifully.

Video: Christmas horror spoof shows the dark side of Siri (Digital Trends)

Siri has, in the main, been well received by both iPhone users and critics alike, with many in both camps having a good ol? chuckle at the silly answers the virtual personal assistant sometimes gives.

The folks behind Austin-based Rooster Teeth Productions decided to take things a step further and imagine a spooky scenario where Siri turns bad and, rather than trying to be helpful, tries to kill you instead.

The result is an entertaining two-minute spoof movie trailer called Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie. It begins light-heartedly enough with a family gathered around a Christmas tree, opening gifts with much gaiety and joy. And whaddya know, everyone receives a brand new iPhone 4S, pre-loaded with Siri!

One recipient asks Siri, ?What?s the meaning of life??

?Life has no meaning,? Siri replies.

And from there things turn sinister. There are plenty of amusingly dark skits within the trailer, such as when one guy driving his car asks Siri if he should turn left or right at a junction. ?Continue driving straight,? Siri tells him. So the man does ? straight into a brick wall.

If you?d prefer to watch a more family-oriented video about Siri than one where the virtual personal assistant turns into a serial killer, check out Apple?s new TV ad here.

For those who want to know what happens when an iPhone app turns bad, watch Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie below.

Change of plea hearing set for Iraqi held in Ky. (AP)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? A federal judge has scheduled a change of plea hearing for one of two Iraqis facing terrorism-related charges in Kentucky.

Senior U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell signed the order setting the change of plea hearing for Waad Ramadan Alwan, who is charged in a 23-count indictment. The hearing is set for Friday afternoon in Bowling Green.

Alwan has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to send sniper rifles, Stinger missiles and money to al-Qaida operatives in Iraq. He also is charged with conspiring to attack American soldiers in Iraq.

Alwan and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi were arrested in Bowling Green in May. Hammadi has pleaded not guilty and is not mentioned in the change of plea order.

Both have remained in federal custody.

Bacterial protein 'mops up' viruses found in contaminated water supplies

Friday, December 16, 2011

Access to clean water is a necessity often taken for granted. However UNICEF estimates that 900 million people across the world do not have access to safe drinking water. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biotechnology shows that an enteric virus-binding protein (EVBP), isolated from bacteria found in activated sludge, is able to capture viruses often present in contaminated water.

One of the difficulties in measuring viral contamination in water is that viruses may be present at a very low concentration yet still make people ill. Even a single enteric virus can infect a human and cause gastroenteritis, and these viruses can survive for a long time in water.

Researchers from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University used activated sludge, produced during sewage treatment by aerating the sewage and allowing bacteria to breakdown organic material, as starting material in their search for a protein able to bind to enteric viruses. Using PCR the researchers isolated the gene coding for one of the subunits of GroEL from sludge DNA. GroEL is a 14 subunit 'chaperone' protein which ensures that proteins are folded correctly during their manufacture.

Using biochemical and enzymatic assays the subunit was found to be able to capture enteric viruses. GroEL is able to bind to hydrophobic amino acids on the surface of proteins and it is thought that the newly isolated EVBP similarly binds to hydrophobic areas on the surfaces of viruses and viral fragments.

Dr Daisuke Sano from Hokkaido University explained, "Unlike virus-specific and expensive antibodies, EVBP bound all the enteric viruses we tested (norovirus, rotavirus and poliovirus). Once developed this easy-to-use method could be used to detect low concentrations of viruses in the clinic or environment."

The fight: Tax cuts, jobless benefits and pipeline (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senate officials say negotiators are close to a deal for a two-month extension of Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. Both are due to expire at the end of the year.

The same package is also expected to require the Obama administration to make a speedy decision on the fate of a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that promises thousands of jobs.

If nailed down, the deal would come up for a vote in the Senate as soon as Saturday.

Majority Republican leaders in the House were not involved in the negotiations.

The developments came after the White House backed away from a veto threat that centered on the pipeline.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The White House backed away from a critical veto threat Friday as top Republicans in Congress served noticed they will extend expiring Social Security payroll tax cuts only if President Barack Obama swiftly decides the fate of a proposed oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

With Republicans talking tough and lawmakers from both parties anxious to leave for the holidays, Obama spokesman Jay Carney declined several times to repeat Obama's earlier statement that he would reject any attempt to link the tax cuts and the Canada-to-Texas pipeline. "There's a process at work. I'm not going to analyze what language would be acceptable and what wouldn't," Carney told reporters.

He made his comments as Republican and Democratic leaders sought a compromise on legislation to renew the tax cuts and long-term jobless benefits that are at the heart of the jobs program that Obama submitted to Congress last fall.

Racing to adjourn for the year, lawmakers moved swiftly to clear separate legislation avoiding a partial government shutdown threatened for midnight ? focusing attention on the final disputed issue in a tempestuous year of divided government in an era of high joblessness and public dissatisfaction with Congress.

Obama has said extensions of the tax cuts and unemployment benefits are necessary to help nurture an economic recovery while also sustaining victims of the recession. Republicans injected the pipeline project into the legislation after the president postponed a decision on the long-studied project until after the 2012 elections.

Under the House-passed tax measure the project will go forward unless Obama decides in 60 days that its construction is not in the national interest.

"Let's not just pass a bill that helps people on the benefits side, let's also include something that actually helps the private sector create the jobs Americans need for the long term," Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in Senate-floor remarks that challenged Obama to give ground

In a political jab, he added, "Here's an opportunity for the president to say he's not going to let a few radical environmentalists stand in the way of a project that would create thousands of jobs and make America more secure at the same time."

Obama said on Dec. 7 that "any effort to try to tie Keystone to the payroll tax cut I will reject. So everybody should be on notice."

More recently a veto threat issued Tuesday against the House-passed version of the bill cited the introduction of "ideological issues into what should be a simple debate about cutting taxes for the middle class." Senior administration officials later told reporters that was a reference to the pipeline.

Apart from the pipeline, negotiators for the two parties struggled over other differences as they sought agreement on the last major measure of the year.

Officials said there was widespread agreement to keep the Social Security tax cut in place for 2012, noting that if it lapsed, 160 million Americans could experience a cut in take-home pay at a time when the economy is still struggling to recover from the worst recession in decades. The president had originally sought to expand the cut but has effectively jettisoned that proposal.

The president also is seeking a renewal of the current system under which a maximum of 99 weeks of jobless benefits is available for the long-term unemployed. The House measure cuts that to 79, and officials said the two sides were considering a compromise between the two levels.

Both parties want to avoid a threatened 27 percent cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients, but that, too, was in flux. The House-passed bill provides a two-year reprieve at a cost of about $38 billion over a decade. Officials said it was possible that delay could be cut to a single year, depending on the level of cuts negotiators could agree on elsewhere in the budget to offset the cost.

That same issue ? cuts to make sure the bill did not raise federal deficits ? lay at the heart of the negotiations.

The cost of the payroll tax extension alone was estimated at $120 billion over a decade, and Obama and Democrats agreed long ago to meet GOP demands that the legislation not raise deficits.

Democrats initially wanted to slap a surtax on million-dollar income earners to cover the cost, over the protests of Republicans. The Democrats eventually relented, but not before attacking GOP senators as protectors of the rich at the expense of the middle class and arranging a pair of test votes that could well provide fodder for Senate races in 2012.

Republicans sought to wield the Keystone pipeline project as a similar sort of issue against Democrats and Obama.

While environmental groups oppose the project, several blue-collar unions support it, as do an unknown number of Democratic lawmakers.

The State Department, in an analysis released this summer, said the project would create up to 6,000 jobs during construction, while developer TransCanada put the total at 20,000 in direct employment.

The 1,700-mile pipeline would carry oil from western Canada to refineries in Texas, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The spending bill would lock in cuts that conservative Republicans won from the White House and Democrats earlier in the year.

Republicans also won their fight to block new federal regulations for light bulb energy efficiency, coal dust in mines and clean water permits for construction of timber roads.

The White House turned back GOP attempts to block limits on greenhouse gases, mountaintop removal mining and hazardous emissions from utility plants, industrial boilers and cement kilns.

After a last-minute veto threat, Republicans abandoned attempts to block an administration policy to ease restrictions on visits to Cuba and on the money sent to relatives on the Communist island nation from family members living in the United States.

Additionally, the legislation bars military and economic aid to Pakistan until the administration certifies that Islamabad is cooperating on counterterrorism, including taking steps to prevent groups such as the Haqqani network from operating in the country.

The provision stems from concerns that the Pakistani government harbors terrorists, and from assertions that some government officials knew that Osama bin Laden had established residence deep inside the country. Bin Laden was killed in May by U.S. commandos who raided his fortified compound in Abattabod.

How to control your online shopping

I find it very easy to buy stuff online without adequate thought. I?ll click a few times and suddenly the item I want is on the way.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

I particularly struggle with three sites directly connected to three of my biggest hobbies: Amazon (for books), Cool Stuff Inc. (for board games), and Steam (for computer games ? and, yes, Steam sales are particularly my weak spot).

Over the years, I?ve had to build up some defenses against these temptations. I?ve tried lots of different things, but I?ve found that only three of them really work and make a difference in my buying habits.

Delete Passwords and Credit Card Info
?Whenever I place an order at one of these sites, one of the first things I do is make sure that my credit card information is not stored at that site. When my browser prompts me to save the password for the site, I always say ?no.?

For some people, this might seem like an annoyance. It?s supposed to be. The reason for doing this is to force me to slow down when I?m tempted to make an unnecessary purchase.

Let?s say, for example, that I?ve been reading reviews of some board game and I?ve talked myself into spending some of my extra money on a copy of that game. If I left my password saved and my billing information stored in the online retailer?s site, then I can have that game shipped to my house after a simple search and about six clicks.

On the other hand, if I?ve deleted my password and my billing and shipping information, I have to spend the time to type in my username and password, type in my card number and other information, and type in my billing address and shipping address. This adds up to several minutes of additional typing.

During that time, my mind on some level is rethinking the purchase. ?Is it really worth it?? I?ll ask myself. Quite often, I?ll wind up never placing the order at all. This keeps money in my pocket instead of watching it leave for something frivolous.

Keep a ?Already Have This? List Nearby
?On my computer screen, I have three Post-It notes.

One says ?Books to Read:? and lists about five books that I already have on my shelves.

Another says ?Games to Play:? and lists about five board games that I already have on my shelves.

The third says ?Computer Games to Play:? and lists about five computer games that I?d love to dig into more.

Whenever I?m tempted to buy another one of these items, I just glance at these notes and I realize that I already have more than enough.

Use the Computer Less
?My final tactic is to simply use the computer ? particularly the internet ? less and interact with the real world more. Instead of surfing the web during my idle time, why not read one of those books on my ?Books to Read? list or play a board game with my wife? Instead of playing a computer game, why not just go for a nice walk?

The computer is a wonderful source for entertainment, information, and contact, but in the end, those things are just a stepping stone for interacting with the world around you.

Keep these tactics in mind if you find yourself regularly tempted by online shopping. They guide me to better results; hopefully, you?ll find the same.

Barry Bonds gets 30-day home sentence _ at worst

(AP) ? Eight years of being investigated over steroid allegations ended for baseball's home run king Barry Bonds on Friday with a 30-day sentence to be served at home. No more ? and maybe less.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston immediately delayed imposing the sentence while Bonds appeals his obstruction of justice conviction. The former star was found guilty in April not of using steroids, but of misleading grand jurors.

Even without prison time, the case has left its mark on the seven-time National League MVP. His 762 career home runs, and 73 homers in 2001, may forever be seen as tainted records, and his ticket to baseball's Hall of Fame is in doubt.

Bonds declined to speak in court. Well-wishers hugged the 47-year-old in the hallway courtroom after the hearing was over, and a smattering of fans cheered him as he left the courthouse. It was a marked departure from his initial court appearance four years ago, when guards had to clear a path for Bonds to get through dozens of onlookers to his SUV.

"Whatever he did or didn't do, we all lie," said Esther Picazo, a fan outside the courthouse. "We all make mistakes. But I don't think he should've gotten any kind of punishment at all."

Bonds was sentenced to two years of probation, 250 hours of community service, a $4,000 fine and 30 days of home confinement. It will take time to determine whether he serves any of it; his appellate specialist, Dennis Riordan, estimated it would take nearly a year and a half for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rule.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella called the sentence a "slap on the wrist" and the fine "almost laughable" for a superstar athlete who made more than $192 million for playing baseball.

Parrella had sought 15 months in prison and argued that home confinement wasn't punishment enough "for a man with a 15,000-square-foot house with all the advantages." Bonds lives in a six-bedroom, 10-bath house with a gym and swimming pool.

"The defendant basically lived a double life for decades before this," Parrella said. He ripped Bonds not only over performance-enhancing drugs but over his personal life: "He had mistresses throughout his marriages."

Parrella said Bonds made lots of money due in part to his use of performance enhancers and that he has been "unrepentant" and "unapologetic" about it.

Illston said none of that had any bearing on Bonds' sentencing.

She said she agreed with a probation department report that called Bonds' conviction an "aberration" in his life. She said she received dozens of letters in support of Bonds, some discussing how he has given money and time "for decades" to charitable causes.

Bonds is the last ? and highest-profile ? defendant in the government's investigation of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, a steroids distribution ring. The ex-slugger has long denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Illston said she was compelled to give Bonds a sentence similar to the two she meted out to other figures convicted after trial of lying to the grand jury and federal investigators about their connection to steroids.

The case against Bonds after he testified before the grand jury Dec. 3, 2003. Prosecutors revised his original 2007 indictment several times and spent a year unsuccessfully appealing a key evidentiary ruling before jurors deadlocked in April on three of the four remaining charges related to his grand jury testimony.

On the final charge, the trial jury convicted Bonds of purposely answering questions about steroids with rambling non sequiturs in an attempt to mislead the grand jury.

"I think he probably got off a little easy," said Jessica Wolfram, one of the jurors who convicted Bonds of obstruction. "He was just so clearly guilty, so I actually am happy he got sentenced to something."

Wolfram said she researched the case after the trial and viewed evidence not presented then. After that, she felt even more comfortable that Bonds was guilty.

Besides Bonds, 10 people were convicted of various charges in BALCO cases. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.

The government's top BALCO investigator, Jeff Novitzky, declined to comment outside the courtroom after attending the hearing.

Bonds was one of two former baseball superstars to stand trial in doping-related cases this year. The trial of pitcher Roger Clemens was halted after just two days in July because prosecutors used inadmissible evidence. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has set a new trial for April 17.

Both men will face a different judgment day in 2013, when they'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame.
