Inhabitat's Week in Green: 3D printed boat, algae-based biofuel and a bus that does push-ups

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: 3D printed boat, algae-based biofuel and a bus that does push-ups

The Olympic flame completed its tour through the UK this week as the 2012 Summer Games officially kicked off on Friday, and all eyes have been on London ever since. All week long we've been focusing on the Olympics, beginning with an overview of London's new Olympic Park, which is headlined by the Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatics Centre, and Anish Kapoor's controversial ArcelorMittal Orbit observation tower. For a deeper look at the venues that will be on display at the Olympics over the next two weeks, check out our roundup of the top six green buildings at the Olympics. In addition to the sports stadiums, Olympics visitors will also be treated to the sights and sounds of Coca-Cola's multi-sensory Beatbox Pavilion, an interactive sound and light display that responds to touch. But the art installation that we're most excited about is the one by artist David Cerny, who retrofitted a 6-ton London double-decker bus with a gigantic pair of human arms. Best of all, the arms are motorized, enabling the bus to do push-ups.

SIMMONS: Mayor better be on the job for jobs

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Eric Smith doesn?t ordinarily spend his Saturday mornings anxiously waiting in line to get inside a church.

Yet there he stood over the weekend among hundreds and hundreds of strangers, all of whom were profusely sweating from the midmorning sun and the prospect of a getting a job with one of the nation?s biggest big-box retailers at Costco?s job fair at Mount Horeb Baptist Church in Northeast.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Ward 5 D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie worked the line, which snaked around the corner onto Bladensburg Road and grew longer and shorter as applicants entered the church after descending from Metrobuses, cars and vans and arriving on foot.

The job fair was so successful that another is being planned for September ? and I have the mayor on record promising to follow through.

Many of the job applicants Saturday were newly minted senior citizens, those old enough to get an AARP card at age 50, but scores of others were barely old enough to buy alcohol.

They all were hoping and praying, telling the mayor and other organizers of their unemployment dilemmas, the kind that do not show up in the monthly labor reports.

Mr. Smith was one such job seeker.

He knows word from Costco might not come this week or next, and he knows it?s because of what continues to place him between a rock and a very hard place.

?I?m an ex-offender, but it?s not who I am,? said Mr. Smith, who ordinarily would have been at a program with other offenders. ?It?s what I served time for.?

What he did was shoot another human being in 1990, violating one of God?s commandments and man?s law.

Does he regret what happened? He said he does.

Is he trying to walk the straight and narrow? He said he is.

But Mr. Smith, a 41-year-old Washington native, is more than a returning citizen in search of steady employment in a city and nation where joblessness is as much of a measure of a man as local and national politics.

As a husband, father of disabled kids and grandfather, he said he keeps his eyes focused on what could be, like his son Angelo.

Speaking freely: Divine Fatherhood and True Family

You know, lately I cringe every time I see a blog post about the value of fatherhood. Which I see generally because I know too many Reformed folk?not that Lutherans are immune to making claims about male headship, just quieter about it on the whole.

But this morning's epistle, from Ephesians 3, begins with a passage that raises the question front and center. "For this reason," namely the charism of missionary responsibility, in spite of the troubles it brings, "I genuflect before the Father, from whom every family in the heavens and on the earth is so named ...". Which is a play on pater and patria, and which doesn't translate well into English because we lack the pun. It's much like the implication, now stated outright in the series, that civilizations everywhere get the word "doctor" from the Doctor.

So, following on my recent realizations about Barth's anthropology, I want to sketch out, in a Barthian vein, why the nature of family deriving from the Fatherhood of God is not in any way a claim about the value of the human male.

Think about it just a bit. Where do we get the use of "Father" for God? It's not from Jesus; that just incarnates the messianic logic by which the people already used "Father" for God. Jesus as the messianic Son who happens also to be the genuine son is simply the fulfillment of an old and perpetual promise in a new way. He uses language for God that his audience already accepts without question. As does Paul. "God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ." It's formulaic. How did it get that way?

If you look through the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomistic History, you'll find that the terms "God" and "father" are more distantly related. The standard reference is to YHWH as "the Lord God of our fathers." The god of Abraham, and then the god of Isaac, and Jacob; therefore also the god of Israel and Judah, so long as they do not seek other gods than the god of their fathers. God is the origin of the family of the people of God, the one who made "father Abraham" a father, the one whose promise it was that he would become "the father of many peoples."

And God is the one who decides who in the lineage becomes a "father" of the people, too?the story of Jacob is a prime example of the choice against "natural" type. Esau is the male, the son to do his father proud, the masculine heir whose strength secures the well-being of both the family and its future offspring. Except ... Esau is not the strength of the family. No one but God alone is the strength of the people of God. And Esau becomes the father of a family of his own ... but only because God has been good to him, because God has become his strength and his security. God is the god of the fathers of the peoples, and they become families and peoples by right of God's strength and provision, not their own.

So let's get that right: it is active trust in God that makes a family possible. Or, let's say, a just family. The nature of true human family is faith in God. It is so whether this happens to align with our concepts of human nature and natural relationships, or not?and it is emphatically, visibly the case when it does not.

Now, Abraham became a father before God made him one, by human conspiracy. But the result was discord and injustice. The result was the destruction of a family, a further injustice that only God could rectify?the same God in whose sight Hagar and Ishamel remained, severed from Abraham, and became a family in their own right because of God's providence for them. Abraham's trust, and his love for the son of God's own providence to him, had to be restored through more painful means. How do you redeem the trust of a man whose beloved son you have taken away for his own good? How do you redeem his virtue as a parent to the "other" son he has left?

And so we see that in Abraham God has created the patriarchy, but that this has nothing to do with maleness. It is patriarchy that is not permitted to follow patriarchal principles. It is simply the arche patrias, as suggested in Ephesians 3:14, for God provides in Abraham's faith the principle of all family, and it is not Abraham himself! His fatherhood would not exist were it not for the source of all family, the One whom alone we rightly call Father. And, unlike the Pentateuch and the DtrH, the Psalms and the Prophets follow suit, speaking in poetic language of God as Father, and not just the god of their fathers. And it is in the imagery of God as the Father of the people, and not just the god of their fathers, that we receive from the tradition the logic of messianic sonship. It is in this way that the Covenant Father, from whom Israel inherits, is truly the father of Jesus Christ, the messianic instrument of that inheritance. And it is in this way that, contrary to our nature as gentiles, we have been grafted into the family of God and made participants in true, just family.

And so, if we follow this as Barth follows the true humanity of Christ, we are obliged to say that there is no creaturely, natural basis for family separable from God. There is no lingering remnant of created order in our worldly institutions. Providence works wholly apart from that. It is not the nature of our being human that determines the meaning and construction of family. Family has no natural form, not even the bare reproductive pairing of male and female that describes the nature of human being qua animal life. Male and female God created us, the sole natural distinction within our kind as humanity, but sexual and reproductive realities are not constitutive of family, no matter how euphemistically we might speak of "fathering" a child through genital interaction.

If we look to God as our truth, in fact, family has nothing necessary to do with blood lineage, either. Family comes about by choice, by the election of love. Family, in fact, comes by adoption. Family is constituted, in the Fatherhood of God, by the first and ultimate "Yes" of God to the creature, the affirmation that redeems us from all sin and failure. This is what it means that we are not merely creatures of the Creator, but children of the heavenly Father. This is the nature of true family, as we see it in God.

myKaZoo Music & myKaZootv Partnership With Universal Music ...

?New Companies Providing Parent-Friendly,

Educational and Entertaining Media for Kids Ages 2 to 8

Bruce Resnikoff, President & CEO, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), announced today a partnership with two leading music industry executives, Rick Dobbis and Richard Ellis, to create myKaZoo Music and myKaZootv, two multi-platform children?s and family entertainment companies designed to reach parents and kids where they live today. Together, the new companies will bring a fresh approach to family music, presenting top kid-centric artists via new media platforms and marketing initiatives designed to expand the category.

Headquartered in Los Angeles and New York, myKaZootv (http://www.mykazootv.com) launches in January with a 24/7 interactive kids? music video channel. In addition, the myKaZoo Music label (Http://www.mykazoomusic.com), in partnership with UMe, will debut on February 7th with Farmer Jason?s Nature Jams. ?We are excited about partnering with Jason for our first release.? Beginning with this incredible collection of songs and our future artists releases, we will bring family entertainment brand to a broad, new audience,? said Resnikoff.

Several initiatives will extend the reach of myKaZoo music and videos this year. In addition to the online presence for myKaZootv, the company is partnering with Kabillion TV On Demand, which reaches over 40 million digital households and is available on Comcast, Time Warner, Charter and local MSO?s. Beginning in March, Kabillion will feature a block of KaZoo music videos that will be updated weekly. Kidtoon Films, an on-going matinee program that brings kid-friendly content to movie-going families every month at a 120 theatre locations nationwide, has partnered with MyKaZoo TV to include music videos into its 2012 programming schedule.

myKaZoo Music and myKaZootv enter the children?s entertainment scene at a time when 80 percent of children under age 5 use the Internet and 60 percent of children under ages 3 watch videos online (Ganz Cooney Center), and when 1 in 4 mothers allow their preschool children to interact with a mobile phone (Parenting Group/BlogHer). The company aims to tap into new marketing opportunities to reach today?s super-connected families, while tapping into the similar explosion of professionally produced, smart and child-appropriate programming that the savviest family music artists create every day.

myKaZoo is a joint project of Rick Dobbis, former president of Sony Music International and owner of the entertainment company R-DOG, LLC , and Richard Ellis, founder and owner of the youth entertainment marketing company 12to20 and a former major music label executive.

myKaZootv and myKazoo Music will both focus on content acquisition and wide-ranging marketing programs, which will be announced soon. ?We see a vast potential in the $1.2 billion children?s entertainment genre,? says Ellis. ?There are hundreds of independent artists around the country making great music and videos with little coordinated access to national publicity, marketing and distribution. We aim to create a next-generation music distribution and marketing company to reach parents and children where they live ? online and via new technologies.? Dobbis agrees, saying, ?We are evangelists for the category. We believe in what these artists are creating and want to give this underdeveloped genre the support and exposure it deserves.?

myKaZoo Music is the company?s family music label, launching in partnership with UMe. ?We will have global reach due to our partnership with the leading music company in the world, but we?ll operate like an indie label,? notes Dobbis. ?The partnership with UMe will bring smart, artist-driven family music to more people and places than ever before.?

myKaZootv is an always-on, interactive multi-channel video platform, broadcasting music videos for children ages 2 to 8, with features that make it better than television. Beginning with an online presence offered free to parents and kids, the channel will soon be accessible via handheld devices (phone and tablet platforms), and cable television. The channel offers parents and kids a safe, focused environment showing hundreds of entertaining music videos by top artists, kid hosts and humorous educational interstitials, all organized by topic and artist and easily selected by young viewers. Visit http://www.mykazootv.com to view the first video and game features on the site.

The first release for myKaZooMusic is Farmer Jason?s Nature Jams (February 7, 2012), which offers a high-value, kid-friendly gift package of 16 original songs, 4 music videos and a colorful 20-page booklet. ??Farmer Jason sings along with special guest artists (including Mike Mills from R.E.M., Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, Iris DeMent, Brandi Carlile, Hank Williams III, Webb Wilder and Tommy Ramone of The Ramones) about nature and active play. With these engaging songs and videos, Farmer Jason and ?buddies?- hope to motivate children to get outside and experience nature firsthand. myKaZootv will also premiere additional music videos based on these songs in early 2012. Farmer Jason is Jason Ringenberg, also known for his alt-country band Jason and the Scorchers. This regularly touring artist has also built a fervid international fan base for his kids? music and public TV videos.

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) is the centralized U.S. catalog and special markets entity for Universal Music Group.? Working in conjunction with all of the company?s record labels, UMe provides a frontline approach to catalog management, a concentration of resources, a greater emphasis on strategic marketing initiatives and opportunities in new technological fields.?UMe is also designed to aggressively develop a cohesive and strategic approach to maximizing catalog repertoire by initiating and implementing integrated marketing campaigns, direct to consumer programs, brand management initiatives and strategic partnerships.

How to talk to your Mac: Using diction effectively

18 hrs.

One of the more useful and interesting features in OS X Mountain Lion is Dictation, which allows you to speak to your Mac and have your words translated to text. It's system-wide, and works in any app where text can be entered. Before you dive in and start speaking to your Mac, here's how to use it to its fullest.

If you've used a tool like Dragon Naturally Speaking, Siri on your iPhone, or Google Voice Actions (or another personal assistant) on your Android phone, you know how Dictation works already. The difference here is that instead of using Dictation to issue commands, search the web, or call friends, it's ideal for writing documents, commenting on articles, and turning your thoughts into blocks of text anywhere text can be entered. Here's how to set it up.

Enable Dictation in System Preferences

  1. Click the Apple Menu and select System Preferences
  2. Under "System" click "Dictation and Speech."
  3. Toggle Dictation from Off (default) to On.
  4. Optional: Change the default keyboard shortcut to enable dictation?if you use an external keyboard, you may not have a dedicated function button.

Once enabled, tap the function key (FN) twice (or whichever shortcut you selected) to start or stop Dictation. You can also skip System Preferences entirely by tapping the function key twice from any window, but we think the long way is best so you can change the shortcut if you want.

Keep in mind that when you use Dictation, your words (and some other data) are sent to Apple to be translated into text?much like when you use Siri. Apple says the data is used to improve voice recognition only, and not associated with any other information Apple may have about you.

Use a Headset or Microphone
In the Dictation and Speech preferences, you have the choice to switch the input used for dictation to your Mac's line-in over the internal microphone. Unless you're sitting right in front of your Mac all the time, we'd suggest using a headset or dedicated microphone when you're working with Dictation. Using the internal mic isn't bad, but using a headset is definitely better and in our tests led to fewer skipped or incorrect words. Of course, common sense also applies: speak loudly and clearly when working with dictation and you'll have better luck. No mumbling!

Don't forget punctuation and commands
Remember, the dictation tool translates your words into text?it doesn't know much about grammar. That means if you want a comma in a sentence, or want to end a sentence with a period or exclamation point, you have to say it aloud for the app to understand what you want. It''s tricky to get into the habit of saying things like?"Dear Adam comma new line thank you for sending this over to me period it's a huge help exclamation point"?but you'll get the hang of it. The result, of course, would be:

Dear Adam,

Thank you for sending this over to me. It's a huge help!

Dictation does a good job of recognizing proper nouns and capitalizing them, and can even recognize your contacts' names and proper spellings. Here are some other helpful commands to remember:

  • "All Caps"?turns all of the following text into ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • "New Paragraph", as the name implies, starts a new paragraph.
  • "New Line"?inserts a carriage return.
  • Dollar amounts and dates are automatically recognized, so saying "thirteen dollars and twenty five cents" will appear as "$13.25," and "july twenty-fifth twenty-twelve at 9 PM" will appear "July 25, 2012 at 9PM."
  • "Smiley" and "Frowny" correspond to their emoticons, and are displayed as ":-)" and ":-(" respectively.
  • Punctuation like "comma", "period", and "quotation mark", all work the way you would expect.

Dictation works out of the box. You don't need to train it with your voice, and while it does get better over time as it learns your voice, it's not like many mobile assistants that need hours of input before they work effectively. Best of all, it supports US, UK, and Australian English, so an accent from any of those locations won't matter much. If you use your Mac in a different language, Dictation also supports French, German, and Japanese, and will enter text spoken in those languages correctly.

Katherine Jackson apparently back home

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Katherine Jackson is apparently back home, reuniting with Michael Jackson's children after a judge temporarily took away her guardianship because of her days-long absence from them.

Paris Jackson tweeted early Thursday morning: "grandma's here! (hash)thankyougod." Katherine Jackson's son Marlon also posted a note on Twitter saying his mother had returned, adding she looked and sounded great.

On Wednesday, a judge removed Katherine Jackson as guardian temporarily and named her grandson Tito Joe "TJ" Jackson as temporary caretaker of the late legend's three minor children amid a bitter family dispute over Michael Jackson's estate.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff issued the ruling because Katherine Jackson was in Arizona and hadn't spoken with the children in several days. TJ Jackson now has the ability to control the hilltop home where the children live and to take on other supervision duties.

Katherine Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was "based on a bunch of lies."

"I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home to see about that, also," she said reading from a prepared statement.

She denied the suggestion made in court and in court filings to support TJ Jackson's appointment that she was being held against her will.

"I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will," she said while her children Randy, Janet and Rebbie were seated next to her. "It's very stupid for people to think that."

But on Thursday, Michael Jackson's son Prince posted a photo of what he said was a group text message involving Rebbie and Janet in which he demanded contact with his grandmother and Janet allegedly responded: "Please don't let them."

"As long as I can remember my dad repeatedly warned me of certain people and their ways," Prince Michael tweeted. "Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realize how misguided and how badly she was lied to. I'm really angry and hurt."

Beckloff said there was no evidence that Katherine Jackson had done anything wrong, but instead it appeared she was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian through the "intentional acts of third parties." He didn't elaborate but made the decision after reading court filings in which TJ Jackson expressed concern that Katherine Jackson was being prevented from returning.

He cited a Monday incident in which Janet, Randy and Jermaine Jackson arrived at the children's home and told them they could speak with their grandmother but had to leave with them.

"This was odd and disturbing to me and (the children) and heightened our concern that our grandmother was being prohibited from returning home," TJ Jackson wrote in a sworn statement. The incident turned into a confrontation between two male adults at the house and sheriff's officials say it remains an ongoing battery investigation.

Beckloff listened as attorneys described Katherine Jackson's demeanor as unusual on phone calls placed to the children hours before the hearing.

TJ Jackson's attorney Charles Shultz also revealed in court filings that the children were forced to miss school Wednesday because of concerns about their security.

Beckloff ruled the Jackson children could not leave California without court approval.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said after the hearing that he spoke with his client as she was driving back to Los Angeles from Tucson, Ariz., where she had been since July 15.

"She sounded absolutely fine, lucid and her normal self," he said.

Sanders plans to ask the court to reinstate Katherine Jackson as guardian of the children when she is back in Los Angeles. He was looking forward to meeting with her in person on Thursday.

The public battle was revealed early Sunday after a relative reported Katherine Jackson missing, but she was later located safely with other family members in Arizona.

Jermaine Jackson has said his mother was following doctor's orders to cut off communications with the children, who range in age from 10 to 15. He didn't provide further details.

In addition to concerns about the safety of Jackson's children, some of Michael Jackson's siblings have recently called on the executors of his estate to resign.

Randy Jackson appeared Tuesday on Al Sharpton's MSNBC show PoliticsNation and said he believes his brother's will is a fake and that the executors have engaged in criminal activity.

The estate, which recently reported it saw $475 million in gross earnings since Jackson's death in June 2009, has denied wrongdoing and called the accusations "false and defamatory."

Beckloff, who also oversees financial issues affecting Jackson's estate, was initially reluctant to appoint a temporary guardian but changed his mind after hearing from several attorneys who expressed concern about the family's problems.

He made the ruling after hearing TJ Jackson's description of a "strange" conversation he had with Katherine Jackson on Tuesday evening.

"I've never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said reluctantly. "In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses."

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Her son Marlon echoed those concerns on Twitter, complaining that siblings Janet, Randy and Jermaine were keeping her from him.

The children's guardian ad litem, Margaret Lodise, said she spoke with the children and the two oldest, Prince and Paris, supported the appointment of a temporary guardian. Lodise did not ask the youngest son, 10-year-old Blanket, for his views.

Lodise is responsible for overseeing the children's interests in the estate of their father.

Schultz said TJ Jackson didn't want to replace Katherine Jackson as permanent guardian. Still, the judge noted that TJ Jackson would have to petition to become the permanent guardian within 48 hours and added that such a petition might not be heard if Katherine Jackson re-emerges.

Sanders said he would fight any move to have her permanently replaced.

He said he met with Randy and Janet Jackson in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, but he was not allowed to see his client. He said he still hoped the recent events were a misunderstanding, but he described them as "chaos."

PFT: Blackmon avoids jail with DUI guilty plea

Aaron+Berry+Minnesota+Vikings+v+Detroit+Lions+qYIC5c4mkKClGetty Images

The Lions announced on Monday that they?ll be terminating the contract of cornerback Aaron Berry.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Lions also officially waived Berry on Monday.

As a result, all other teams have the ability to submit a waivers claim for Berry?s contract by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Undrafted in 2010, Berry is due to earn a base salary of $465,000 in 2012, the final year of his current contract.? Thus, it?s a low risk, financially, to add him to the roster.? (From a P.R. standpoint, it could be a problem.)

And as we scan the standings for teams that may be interested, one that jumps out is the Buffalo Bills.? New defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt recruited Berry out of high school to attend Pitt.

Of course, if Wannstedt isn?t willing to give one of his former college players a second (or, technically, third) chance, maybe that tells the rest of the league all it needs to know.

The Vikings have a clear need at the cornerback position, but it would be very difficult for the Vikings to justify adding another problem child to the mix, even if they ask Governor Mark Dayton to come up with the formal explanation for the move.

4 Start-Up Accounting Tips for the Young Trep

Unless you?re an accountant, the word ?accounting? probably strikes fear in your heart ? or a little bit of nervousness, at least. For young entrepreneurs, the feeling is probably amplified. After all, poor bookkeeping out of the gate not only can set a project back in the short term, it can really come back to bite you over the long haul. Even young entrepreneurs get audited, you know.

That said, it is possible to avoid the ire of the IRS. Here are a four accounting tips to start your business by:

  1. Start off on the right foot.
In the same way that you go through your email every morning, or in the same way that you do an inventory review each week, make your business? accounting a habit. Set a recurring alarm on your calendar: ?review books!? The frequency is up to you, but you should carve out some accounting time at least once a month, if not more.
  2. Learn the lingo.
The cumbersome terminology of accounting is sometimes the biggest hurdle. Chart of accounts? General ledger? Cash vs. accrual? Accounting lingo isn?t natural ? and ignoring what?s what won?t help you. So take some time to understand the basics. The U.S. Small Business Administration?s Small Business Development Centers are a good place to start, as are accountancy groups like the American Institute of CPA?s and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
  3. Find software that fits you.
Find the accounting software that?s right for you. Don?t simply opt for what your friends use. If you?re always at a desk, a desktop solution, like QuickBooks Desktop might make sense. If you?re like most entrepreneurs and on the go 24/7, something mobile like Xero may make more sense. If you?re running your business from your iPad, go with a cloud-based accounting software package like Easy Books or Kashoo, which both offer iPad apps.
  4. Value good advice.
Chances are, if you spend enough time trying to figure out an accounting issue, you could. But the reality is, you?ve got a business to run. And considering that you?ll need to file taxes quarterly ? not just annually ? there should be a certain degree of urgency involved. For help, look into local resources such as entrepreneur-focused groups for advice. (In Vancouver, where I?m based, we have resources like the British Columbia Innovation Council and the Vancouver Entrepreneur Meetup. Scour your local community for co-working groups as they?ll usually have a schedule of talks and classes specifically for entrepreneurs. WeWork Labs in New York is a great example.) Also, ask former bosses and fellow entrepreneurs to see who they use. Usually, there?s great value in an accountant or bookkeeper who specializes in small business. If nothing more, they?ll be a voice of comfort if you receive some alarmingly confusing IRS mail.

In the end, accounting isn?t really that scary. If you start off right, it can actually be fun. After all, that?s where you?re going to see your fortunes grow.

What better bookkeeping tips would you add to this list? Leave a comment and let us know.

Fifty metric tons of marine debris from Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

ScienceDaily (July 20, 2012) ? NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette arrived back in its homeport of Honolulu? a few days ago after a month in Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument. The team of 17 scientists collected nearly 50 metric tons of marine debris, which threatens monk seals, sea turtles and other marine life in the coral reef ecosystem, in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). NOAA has conducted annual removal missions of marine debris in the NWHI since 1996 as part of a coral restoration effort.

"What surprises us is that after many years of marine debris removal in Papah?naumoku?kea and more than 700 metric tons of debris later, we are still collecting a significant amount of derelict fishing gear from the shallow coral reefs and shorelines," said Kyle Koyanagi, marine debris operations manager at NOAA Fisheries' Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and chief scientist for the mission. "The ship was at maximum capacity and we did not have any space for more debris."

Scientists load boats with marine debris collected at Midway Atoll in Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument. High resolution (Credit: NOAA) This year, marine debris was collected from waters and shorelines around northern most islands and atolls: Kure Atoll, Midway Atoll, Pearl and Hermes Atoll, Lisianski Island and Laysan Island. Approximately half of the debris was composed of derelict fishing gear and plastics from Midway Atoll's shallow coral reef environments, where the team also completed a 27-day land-based mission prior to loading debris on the 224-ft. NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette.

As part of this year's mission, the NOAA team did look for debris from the 2011 tsunami in Japan, however, no debris with an explicit connection to the tsunami was found. Scientists monitored marine debris for radiation in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Health out of abundance of caution and to gather baseline data from the NWHI.

"While we did not find debris with an obvious connection to last year's tsunami, this mission was a great opportunity to leverage activities that had already been planned and see what we might find," said Carey Morishige, Pacific Islands regional coordinator for NOAA's Marine Debris Program. "It's also an important reminder that marine debris is an everyday problem, especially here in the Pacific."

NOAA divers cut a Hawaiian green sea turtle free from a derelict fishing net during a recent mission to collect marine debris in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. High resolution (Credit: NOAA) A portion of the funding for this year's marine debris removal activities was provided as part of the legal settlement collected by NOAA's Damage Assessment, Remediation and Restoration Program from a July 2005 ship grounding at Pearl and Hermes Atoll in the Monument. Additional support was provided by NOAA's Marine Debris Program, NOAA Fisheries' Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument, as well as other partners including U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the State of Hawaii, U.S. Coast Guard, Schnitzer Steel, and Covanta Energy.

Marine debris removed during this project will be used to create electricity through Hawaii's Nets to Energy Program, a public-private partnership. Since 2002, more than 730 metric tons of derelict nets have been used to create electricity -- enough to power nearly 350 Hawai'i homes for a year.

Push in Congress to ban biofuels in military has big long-term costs

The US armed services is working hard to wean itself off of fossil fuels and foreign oil. Yet some in Congress, for short-term savings, want to ban them from purchasing biofuels. Cutting investments in long-term solutions like alternative fuel will cost America dearly in the future.

By Norman Seip / July 16, 2012

An A-10C Thunderbolt II flies over Florida's Gulf Coast on June 29, marking the second flight of an aircraft powered solely by an alcohol-derived jet fuel blend (biofuel). Op-ed contributor Lt. Gen. Norman Seip, US Air Force (retired), says: 'Lawmakers who support [a] misguided ban on biofuels [in the military] may see it as a way to cut costs in the short term. But in the long run, keeping us shackled to fossil fuels comes with even bigger costs...'

Joely Santiago/US Air Force/Reuters

For 35 years, I had the honor of serving in the US Air Force. Whether I was flying F-15s over Iraq or commanding the 12th Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, one concern was always constant: fuel.

The Air Force is the nation?s largest user of oil and gas. It spends about $8 billion on petroleum and electricity every year ? the vast majority on fuel for our aircraft. Every time oil goes up $1 a barrel, it costs the defense department (and we taxpayers) about $130 million.

And remember: This fuel often comes from foreign countries that are hostile to our way of life. We must send our fighting men and women into harm?s way to defend it, to transport it, to burn it. When we burn it, of course, it creates new problems for our health and our planet.

For all these reasons and more, the Air Force and the rest of the armed services are working hard to wean themselves off of fossil fuels and find new alternatives.?Yet some in Congress, driven by short-sighted politics and backed by entrenched fossil-fuel interests, suddenly want our military to retreat.

The House of Representatives recently voted to ban the Department of Defense from purchasing biofuels until they get to the point where they?re cheaper than fossil fuels ? even though the biofuels industry is still trying to claw its way toward competitiveness against the highly subsided oil and gas industry.

The Senate Armed Services Committee also has voted to prohibit Department of Defense from pursuing the development and purchase of advanced biofuels. The full Senate is expected to vote on the committee?s proposal in coming weeks.

Lawmakers who support this misguided ban on biofuels may see it as a way to cut costs in the short term. But in the long run, keeping us shackled to fossil fuels comes with even bigger costs, as we've already learned so well.

In the military, alternative fuels and energy-saving technologies are not pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams. Right now, the US Navy is deploying an entire carrier strike group ? ships, planes, submarines ? that operates on a blend of conventional and algae-based biofuels as part of the 22-nation Rim of the Pacific exercise.

Brain power shortage: Applying new rules is mentally taxing and costly

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2012) ? Can you teach an old dog (or human) new tricks? Yes, but it might take time, practice, and hard work before he or she gets it right, according to Hans Schroder and colleagues from Michigan State University in the US. Their work shows that when rules change, our attempts to control our actions are accompanied by a loss of attention to detail.

Their work is published online in the Springer journal Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience.

In order to adapt to changing conditions, humans need to be able to modify their behavior successfully. Overriding the rules we adhere to on a daily basis requires substantial attention and effort, and we do not always get it right the first time. When we switch between two or more tasks, we are slower and more likely to commit errors, which suggests switching tasks is a costly process. This may explain why it is so hard to learn from our mistakes when rules change.

The authors explain: "Switching the rules we use to perform a task makes us less aware of our mistakes. We therefore have a harder time learning from them. That's because switching tasks is mentally taxing and costly, which leads us to pay less attention to the detail and therefore make more mistakes."

A total of 67 undergraduates took part in the study. They were asked to wear a cap, which recorded electrical activity in the brain. They then performed a computer task that is easy to make mistakes on. Specifically, the participants were shown letter strings like "MMMMM" or "NNMNN" and were told to follow a simple rule: if 'M' is in the middle, press the left button; if 'N' is in the middle, press the right button. After they had followed this rule for almost 50 trials, they were instructed to perform the same task, but with the rules reversed i.e. now if 'M' is in the middle, press the right button; and if 'N' is in the middle, press the left button.

When the rules were reversed, participants made more consecutive errors. They were more likely to get it wrong twice in a row. This showed they were less apt to bounce back and learn from their mistakes. Reversing the rules also produced greater control-related and less error-awareness brain activity.

These results suggest that when rules are reversed, our brain works harder to juggle the two rules -- the new rule and the old rule -- and stay focused on the new rule. When we spend brain energy juggling these two rules, we have less brain power available for recognizing our mistakes.
